Frieze Masters' Queering Modernism Traces Queer Visual Language from the Early 20th Century to the 1980s
Anke Kempkes has put together an intriguing exhibition called Queering Modernism: Visual Languages of the 20th Century at Frieze Masters, which examines Modernism through a queer lens, featuring LGBTQ+ artists from the early 1900s to the 1980s. She’s also curating a future exhibition, Queer Modernism 1900 to 1950, set for 2025 at K20 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. Artists showcased include Iran's Bahman Mohassess, whose bronze work Faun Musician (1971) was removed during the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Brazilian Ismael Nery with his androgynous themes, Glyn Philpot's King Balthazar (1929), Lotte Laserstein's Portrait of Louis Hahne (1939), and Colombian Luis Fernando Zapata's Sarcofagi N° 9 (1992–94). Kempkes emphasizes the market's role in preserving queer art history.
