French Institute's Fabrique Cinéma Program Supports African Filmmakers with Training and Funding

The Fabrique Cinéma program, operated by the Institut français in Paris, is working to support African filmmakers by providing training, networking opportunities, and access to funding. Each year, the program selects ten filmmakers and producers from approximately one hundred applicants, with African participants representing about one-third of the selected projects. The initiative aims to help early-career professionals navigate the competitive international film market by teaching them how to pitch their projects effectively and connect with French industry networks. A key component involves participation in the Festival de Cannes, where filmmakers seek partners and financial backing. The films often address urgent social and political themes, reflecting a desire for greater social justice and anti-discrimination advocacy. Program director Emilie Pianta notes that these first films typically carry significant political and social weight. While the program has been part of broader efforts to bolster African cinema for years, producer Jean Fall points out that structural challenges remain, including limited film distribution across African countries and continued reliance on external funding. The ultimate goal, as stated by Institut français president Eva Nguyen Binh, is to foster local, autonomous networks so that African filmmakers no longer require such external support.
