Fratopia Festival in Frankfurt: Free Five-Day Music Discovery Marathon at Alte Oper
From September 23 to 27, Frankfurt's Alte Oper hosts Fratopia – Festival der Entdeckungen, a free event that dismantles the conventional barrier between performers and audiences. Attendees may sit among the musicians, move freely between halls, and leave one concert for another genre without restriction. Across five days, roughly 250 individual performances unfold from afternoon into late evening in the Großer Saal, Mozart Saal, foyers, and Salon — a format organizers call a "lebendiger Klangparcours." No tickets are required; capacity limits are the only obstacle. Jazz, classical, and popular music deliberately collide. This year's additions include scent concerts and collaborations between music and floristry. The program features tango in chamber arrangement, Beatles songs performed on lute, body percussion, a homage to Venice, an evening for four grand pianos in the Großer Saal, and a "Carmina Burana" singalong. International participants include Icelandic singer Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, Cuban cellist, singer, and composer Ana Carla Maza, Austrian flutist Dora Donata Sammer, French lutenist Thomas Dunford, Italian violinist Clarissa Bevilacqua, clarinetist Sebastian Manz, pianists Danae and Kiveli Dörken, and the percussion ensemble Humanophones. Musicians of the BRSO-Akademie of Bayerischer Rundfunk join the Iwanson International School of Contemporary Dance for a music-dance project. Further details are available via the festival app and online navigator.
