FOTOINDEX: First Digital Dictionary of Spanish Photography Launches

digital · 2026-07-01

FOTOINDEX, the first digital dictionary exclusively dedicated to Spanish photographers, has launched as a dynamic platform for researchers, professionals, students, and cultural institutions. Developed by Rosa Olivares, founder and director of EXIT, the project curates profiles from foundational figures like Charles Clifford and Jean Laurent to National Photography Award winners Cristina García Rodero and Joan Fontcuberta, alongside photojournalists Juana Biarnés and Koldo Chamorro, and contemporary creators Sofía Moro, Ricardo Cases, María Moldes, and Federico Reparaz. Each entry includes biographical and professional information, contextual texts, representative images from different career stages, and resources for further study. The platform functions as a permanent digital exhibition, linking authors, eras, and movements to trace the evolution of Spanish photography from its origins to the present. A collaborative system allows authors, researchers, curators, institutions, galleries, archives, and users to propose additions or corrections, all reviewed by an editorial team to ensure documentary rigor. The project was funded by the Ministry of Culture's Aid for the Promotion of Spanish Photography, supporting research, conservation, dissemination, and valorization of photographic heritage.
