Former NOAA Scientists Relaunch Climate.gov as Independent Nonprofit Climate.us

A year following the closure of Climate.gov by the Trump administration in June 2025, Rebecca Lindsey, the former program manager, has reestablished the site as Climate.us, an independent nonprofit organization. Initially launched in 2010, the original platform served as NOAA's main resource for communicating climate science to the public, drawing nearly 1 million visitors each month. Lindsey, alongside about 80 volunteer scientists and ex-NOAA staff, has rebuilt the site independently of the federal government. Over 2,500 contributors raised more than $321,000, with additional support from an anonymous donor. Climate.us reinstates features such as an archive of climate articles, educational tools, regional climate maps, and a live dashboard for tracking key climate indicators. The shutdown coincided with significant staff reductions at NOAA, which lost over 20% of its workforce, leading to the unavailability of some federal climate datasets and gaps in ongoing observations. This initiative highlights the dedication of the scientific community to maintaining public access to climate data.
