Figma Introduces AI Agent Integration for Direct Design Canvas Access

The new functionality provides coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot CLI, Augment, Factory, Firebender, and Warp with write access to Figma's design canvas through the use_figma MCP tool. This enables these AI systems to manipulate frames, components, variables, auto layout settings, and design tokens that are connected to existing design systems, eliminating the need to transfer specifications between different applications. A key component of this update is the Skills framework, which consists of markdown files that instruct Figma AI agents on team-specific workflows, including component selection, action sequences, and convention adherence. Nine community-developed skills launched alongside the feature, such as /figma-generate-design, /apply-design-system, and /sync-figma-token, with teams able to create custom ones. When equipped with a well-crafted skill file, an agent can operate similarly to a designer who has thoroughly studied all component documentation. This development shifts design system considerations from human-centric documentation to agent-compatible structuring, as the clarity of component names and token consistency directly impacts AI output quality. The feature complements the existing generate_figma_design tool, which converts live HTML into editable Figma layers, facilitating code-design synchronization, accessible annotation generation, and scalable screen variant creation. Figma is offering this functionality free during its beta phase, with plans to transition to usage-based pricing.
