Exposed Torino Foto Festival: A New International Photography Festival Debuts in Turin

The first edition of EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival opened in Turin on May 2, 2024, running until June 2, 2024. The festival features 28 exhibitions across 23 venues throughout the city. Curators Menno Liauw (Director) and Salvatore Vitale (Artistic Director), both from the FUTURES platform (a network of 19 European photography institutions), aim to create an international agenda for contemporary photography. They selected artists primarily in their thirties, deliberately avoiding big names to ensure broad visibility. The festival's theme, "I nuovi paesaggi" (New Landscapes), seeks to decouple photography from geography and explore its future. Vitale noted that while photography is technically accessible, presentation opportunities remain Western-centric; Exposed strives for inclusivity. The curators view AI as a tool that can be both risky (fake news) and beneficial if used intelligently. The logistical challenge of coordinating 23 locations was significant, but the team built the festival from scratch. Visitors are encouraged to explore the city and visit multiple shows, especially at GAM, OGR, and Castello di Rivoli, with some exhibitions extending beyond June 2.
