Earth Music Theater Sets Classical Music to Astronauts' Orbital Footage

Earth Music Theater, a multimedia project facilitated by the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), pairs live and recorded classical music with photographs and videos taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The footage is captured from the Cupola, a window-filled module used for observing spacewalks, incoming vehicles, and Earth. ASE, which represents astronauts from 43 countries, maintains an archive of more than seven million photos and movies for educational use. Earth Music Theater draws on this collection, combining self-composed melodies and classical works, including pieces by J.S. Bach. In one video, the British Baroque ensemble Solomon's Knot performs "Aurora Awakens," while in others guitarist Steve Thomas interprets the imagery through original songs. The visual material includes Jessica Meir's footage of aurora australis moving across the atmosphere as the ISS orbits above Antarctica, alongside shots of terrain and weather patterns. The project's catalog contains dozens of films, ranging from a few minutes to feature-length.
