Düsseldorf Festival 2026: Genre Boundaries Fall at Performing Arts Event

The Düsseldorf Festival, formerly known as Altstadtherbst, is set to run from September 16 to October 4, 2026, presenting a program that deliberately blurs the lines between music, theater, dance, and circus. The festival, which was renamed in 2012 to better reflect its expanded scope, positions itself as a counter-model to traditional genre-specific programming at public institutions. This year's edition features a strong lineup in contemporary circus, including Sweden's Below Zero and Australia's Circa, alongside dance performances by Israeli stars Sharon Eyal and Hofesh Shechter, both of whom have received international acclaim. Eyal was recently named 'Choreographer of the Year' by the German trade magazine tanz. The festival also includes urban dance through Mourad Merzouki's Compagnie Käfig. The main venue is a theater tent on Burgplatz, with additional events held across the city. The festival's name, 'Performing Arts,' is interpreted broadly, encompassing a wide range of artistic expressions. The program emphasizes a mix of high-quality performances that challenge conventional genre distinctions, aiming to attract audiences interested in innovative and interdisciplinary art.
