Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier Discusses AI-Generated Music Detection and Company Strategy

digital · 2026-04-02

Alexis Lanternier, CEO of the French streaming service Deezer, has detailed the company's approach to identifying AI-generated music. He explained that over the past two years, AI-created tracks have become increasingly sophisticated, often indistinguishable to human listeners. However, since last year, Deezer has developed software capable of detecting characteristic artifacts in audio signals that are imperceptible to the ear but identifiable through mathematical or machine analysis. The company has filtered out millions of songs using this technology and received significant feedback, claiming to currently have the best detection system. A dedicated team of ten employees works exclusively on this task. Lanternier emphasized that Deezer is not opposed to AI itself but aims to ensure transparency and fairness in music streaming by excluding AI-generated titles from algorithmic and editorial recommendations, preventing fraud and protecting revenue for human artists. He noted that AI music is only available on the platform if users explicitly seek it out and is labeled accordingly. Regarding financials, Deezer reported its first small profit of 8.5 million euros on revenue of 534 million euros, attributed to cost-cutting measures such as reducing marketing countries and renting out office space, alongside growing subscriber numbers. Lanternier highlighted Deezer's focus on music authenticity, offering users more control and direct connections to artists through features like private concerts. He also shared personal anecdotes, recalling his youth in Frankfurt, where early school dismissals allowed for extensive sports activities. In terms of trends, he observed a rise in local sounds, with over 50% in Brazil, followed by France, and global growth in genres like Afrobeats, Puerto Rican music, and K-pop, alongside a resurgence of music from the 1970s to 1990s. The company operates primarily in Europe and Brazil, having ceased investments in the Middle East due to economic inefficiency, and employs 550 people. Lanternier stated there are no plans to increase prices, as music streaming remains cost-effective compared to video services.
