David Bowie AR Installation Premieres at Venice Immersive with Unseen Tour Photos

digital · 2026-09-05

During this year's Venice Film Festival, the immersive installation Bowie: Unseen | Unheard made its debut at Venice Immersive on Lazzaretto Vecchio Island. This project, a partnership between Bowie's touring photographer Denis O'Regan and producer Paul Keating from L-Acoustics, features approximately 800 illuminated photographs, soundscapes in 360 degrees, and Bowie’s music within a darkened space. O'Regan curated these exclusive images from a collection of 10,000, showcasing moments from the 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour across eight screens. Many of these images are included in O'Regan's books, Ricochet: David Bowie 1983 and David Bowie by Denis O'Regan. Sound designer Nick Ryan and visual designer Joe Crossley synchronized the visuals with Bowie's tracks, complemented by O'Regan's memories through 80 speakers. O'Regan, who formed a unique friendship with Bowie, dated the tour's make-up artist and shared double dates with Bowie and his partner. This installation marks what would have been Bowie's 80th birthday, stirring emotions related to his passing in 2016. O'Regan aims for attendees to discover a different aspect of Bowie, emphasizing, "He wasn't a rock star when he wasn't on stage, and he liked being quite normal."
