Currents Berlin Debuts with 80 Brands Across 60 Locations, Founders Critique German Design Funding

festival-fair · 2026-09-10

Berlin's new design festival, Currents, commenced on 10 September 2026 and will continue until 12 September. Established by journalists Laura Ewert and Jasmin Jouhar, the festival is curated by the community and financed by the brands involved. It showcases 80 brands across 60 venues, including Objekte Unserer Tage and Konstantin Grcic's label 25kg. A series of talks will take place at the Eternithaus. The founders aspire to enhance Berlin's design landscape, expressing concerns over the German design sector's lack of appreciation and support compared to that of Switzerland and Austria. The festival's inability to secure public funding underscores a dilemma in arts financing. Nevertheless, they remain optimistic about Berlin's potential to become Germany's design capital.
