Contemporary Istanbul 2026: Four Standout Sculptures by Aycock, Cragg, Schumann, and Depp

festival-fair · 2026-09-28

The 21st edition of Contemporary Istanbul, held from September 23rd to 27th, 2026, at Tersane Istanbul, featured four notable sculptures that exemplify the fair's role as a cultural bridge between East and West. Alice Aycock's Spinning Top, presented by Galerie Thomas Schulte, is a white powder-coated aluminium work that merges industrial engineering with dynamic imagination, creating a vortex-like form that oscillates between order and chaos. Tony Cragg's Ivy, shown at Dirimart, is a towering wooden sculpture with a dark green patina, its undulating planes and spiralling contours evoking organic morphology and the fluid dynamics of nature. Regine Schumann's Lightcatcher Istanbul, at Andreae Gallery, uses precision-cut fluorescent acrylic glass to manipulate light and space, turning perception into the artwork's subject. Johnny Depp's The Bunnyman, presented by the SIGG Art Foundation, is a two-metre-high white bronze sculpture that blends fantasy and reality, exploring play as a sophisticated language. All photos are by Ida Ivanka Hamilton. The fair continues to highlight diverse sculptural practices, with each work offering a distinct approach to form, material, and spatial experience.
