Chiharu Shiota invites public to submit letters for site-specific installation at 16th Curitiba International Biennial

Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota is creating a participatory installation called 'The Space Between Us' for the 16th Curitiba International Biennial. The work invites public contributions of handwritten letters, drawings, or collages on A4 paper, which will become part of a large-scale collective installation. Curated by Tereza de Arruda, the exhibition will be presented at the Museu Oscar Niemeyer (MON) from June 14 to November 15, 2026. Shiota describes the project as creating a space where normally hidden personal universes can become visible through artistic expression. Participants must submit their contributions by May 20, either by mail to a specific address in Curitiba or via email to opencall@bienaldecuritiba.org. The biennial's theme is LIMIARES (Thresholds). Shiota's installation transforms individual narratives into a visible collective artwork through this open call process. The artist emphasizes that each submission serves as a self-portrait of the participant's inner world. All submissions must be manually produced; isolated photographs will not be accepted. The project represents a continuation of Shiota's exploration of memory, connection, and invisible networks through immersive installations.
