Chiemeka Offor's Juneteenth Photo Booth Celebrates Black Joy in Prospect Park

On Friday, Chiemeka Offor, a Nigerian-American artist and photographer residing in New York, will present her fourth annual Juneteenth Community Photo Booth in Prospect Park. This complimentary event showcases portraits set against brown curtains and a bamboo hoop adorned with the phrase 'Black Is Beautiful,' drawing influence from renowned African studio photographers such as Seydou Keïta and Malick Sidibé. Collaborating with Black Girls Who Bike and Black Women Photographers, the event will also introduce a live scrapbooking segment for participants to create tangible archives. Offor highlights the importance of capturing Black families, with many attendees receiving their first professional family portrait. Her work, which emphasizes self-portraiture and surrealism, focuses on Black women and the African diaspora, utilizing photography for radical imagination and self-preservation.
