Chemnitz's Tanz Moderne Tanz Festival Bridges Industrial City and International Avant-Garde

The Tanz | Moderne | Tanz festival in Chemnitz, Germany, founded in 2015 by Sabrina Sadowska, ballet director at the local theater, has gained national attention since Chemnitz became a European Capital of Culture last year. The festival highlights the city's role in the modern dance movement, extending beyond Leipzig and Dresden. This year's edition runs from September 16 to 20, aiming to reduce barriers and connect dance with the urban community. It features international guest companies, a breakdance and hip-hop battle, and a children's program called 'Mini Movers.' Notable performances include the French Cie. Retouramont, led by vertical dance pioneer Fabrice Guillot, and the Fabien Prioville Dance Company, which blends urban dance with contemporary forms. The Leipzig-based Forward Dance Company will present 'Seat of Power,' a result of a residency program. The festival underscores Chemnitz's historical significance in the evolution of German modern dance.
