Cats: The Jellicle Ball Revives Broadway with Ballroom Culture at Broadhurst Theatre

A bold revival of Cats opened on Tuesday at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York, reimagining the musical through ballroom culture. Codirected by Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, the production transforms T.S. Eliot's feline characters into ballroom-style families competing for ascension to the Heaviside Layer. Choreography by Omari Wiles and Arturo Lyons, both with decades of ballroom experience, ensures authentic representation. Veteran performers like Chasity 'Tempress' Moore as Grizabella and Junior LaBeija as Gus the Theatre Cat share the stage with Broadway newcomers. Andrew Lloyd Webber, the original composer, joined coproducers Cynthia Erivo, Law Roach, Lena Waithe, and Jeremy Pope in supporting the daring production. Costumes by Obie Award–winning Qween Jean offer a modern interpretation. The opening night featured a yellow carpet inspired by the original poster, followed by an after-party at Chelsea's Pier 60 where attendees including Dylan Mulvaney, Michelle Buteau, Denée Benton, and Peppermint celebrated. André De Shields, playing Old Deuteronomy, described the experience as healing in today's brutal world. Many cast members, such as Teddy Wilson Jr. as Sillabub and Dava Huesca as Rumpleteazer, expressed awe at performing alongside legends.
