Casio SXC-1 portable sampler revives retro music-making

Casio has introduced the SXC-1, a standalone portable sampler that revives the lo-fi charm of its 1985 SK-1 keyboard. First shown as a prototype at NAMM 2026, the device is designed for a generation raised on software who seek tactile, unplugged experiences. It features over 80 sample banks from classic Casio models (SK-1, SK-5, CZ-101, MT-40) and an 8-bit sampling engine with effects like filter, flanger, phaser, bitcrusher, delay, and four-note roll. The SXC-1 requires no app, subscription, or internet connection, positioning itself as a bounded, self-contained tool. This launch reflects a broader trend of rising analogue gear sales, driven by young people's desire for mindfulness and slower, tactile interactions rather than pure nostalgia. The device removes the distractions of plugins and subscriptions, bringing artists closer to their craft.
