Brecht and Weill's 'Mahagonny' Opera Staged in Mexico City by National Opera Company

The National Opera Company of Mexico will present 'The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny' at Mexico City's Palacio de Bellas Artes. This production, directed by Marcelo Lombardero with musical direction by Srba Dinić, opens on March 22 with additional performances on March 24, 26, and 29. The opera, created by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht between 1927 and 1929, premiered in Leipzig in 1930 and critiques capitalism through its story of a desert city where money permits all actions. This staging features a predominantly Mexican cast including Rosa Muñoz, Gustavo López Manzitti, and Hernán Iturralde, with chorus preparation by Luis Manuel Sánchez. The work, performed in German with Spanish subtitles, incorporates cabaret and jazz elements and remains relevant for its social commentary.
