Biennale Teatro 2026 Opens with Intimate Performances in Venice

The 2026 edition of Biennale Teatro, titled 'alter NATIVE', commenced in Venice with a series of intimate performances staged in a small apartment. The audience of about twenty spectators gathered in a room with a coffered ceiling, watching a young man and an older woman eating at a table. The woman undressed, and a seductive Black singer appeared framed against a golden backdrop reminiscent of an Afro Klimt painting. In the kitchen, the woman masked her face with bread dough, transforming into a monstrous figure. A bride with smudged makeup and a fixed gaze tied her white dress to the wall with strands of hair, then opened a window and descended onto a canal, suspended over water from a bridge. The performance explores themes of the unknown and returning home, with ghosts of the house present. The festival runs from June 26, 2026, and continues with further programming.
