Biennale Gherdëina 10 Explores Fragile Paradise in the Dolomites
The tenth edition of Biennale Gherdëina, titled "Future) Paradise Gardens," runs until September 13, 2026, across Ortisei, Santa Cristina, and Pilat in the Dolomites. Curated by Samuel Leuenberger, the biennial features 28 artists who engage with themes of coexistence, collapse, and renewal. Works include Walter Niedermayr's photographic series "Koexistenzen" on communal land stewardship, Kelly Tissot's photographs of local woodworking traditions, and Yuyan Wang's video "Green Grey Black Brown" critiquing petro-capitalism. Jacopo Belloni's olfactory installation extracts pine essence, while Ana Prvački's marble beehives commemorate declining honeybee populations. Bas Smets and Eliane Le Roux installed 300 snow depth poles on Maso Pilat to visualize snowline retreat. Pedro Abu Wirz and philosopher Michael Marder created anthropomorphic garden bodies that decompose over time. The biennial began in 2008 with five artists and now positions paradise as a continuous practice rather than a finished condition.
