Belvedere Museum Hosts Queer-Themed Eurovision Event with Performances and Lectures

On Thursday, May 14, 2026, the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna presented a special program titled 'Queering the Belvedere: Eurovision Song Contest 2026.' The event featured multiple activities from 4:00 PM to 11:45 PM with free admission and no reservation required. Highlights included an open rehearsal by the choir 'Chor der schönen Aussichten' led by musician and theater director Bernadette La Hengst, where participants could join in singing. This choir was established in March 2026 as part of a community outreach initiative. Guided tours in German and English offered insights into the building's history. A lecture by historian Dr. Dean Vuletic explored the political aspects of the Eurovision Song Contest and its significance for queer communities. Vuletic, known as 'Professor Song Contest,' is a recognized academic authority on the topic. Later, Bernadette La Hengst performed with the choir, presenting songs collaboratively developed since March. The evening concluded with a public viewing of the Eurovision second semi-final, hosted by queer feminist performer Denice Bourbon, who provided commentary. Bourbon is a co-founder of the queer comedy club PCCC*. The event was part of the museum's annual Queering the Belvedere series, emphasizing inclusivity and cultural engagement. Attendees could also visit current exhibitions by artists Sandra Mujinga, Sue Williams, and Friedl Kubelka/vom Gröller free of charge.
