Bayreuth Festival Debuts AI-Generated 'Ring' for 150th Anniversary

The Bayreuth Festival is using artificial intelligence to create visuals for a new production of Wagner's 'Ring des Nibelungen' for its 150th anniversary. Marcus Lobbes, director of the Academy for Theater and Digitality in Dortmund, serves as curator for the project, having trained a custom AI model on the libretto, music, historical context, and dramaturgical analysis. The AI generates real-time imagery in three-minute slots, projected via six projectors, starting from fixed images for each act. The production premieres on July 27 with 'Rheingold,' conducted by Christian Thielemann and featuring Michael Volle, Klaus Florian Vogt, and Christa Mayer. Lobbes emphasizes the project is a one-time event due to rapid technological obsolescence. The AI does not access the internet, only pre-selected data. The approach saves costs on rehearsals and lighting, with only four days of ensemble rehearsal and no lighting rehearsals. Detlev Baur, editor-in-chief of 'Die Deutsche Bühne,' notes that AI is increasingly relevant in theater as a reflection of societal change. Lobbes predicts many theaters will experiment with AI in the coming season.
