Bavarian State Paintings Collections Add Frames to Online Collection

The Bavarian State Paintings Collections (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen) have expanded their online collection to include information on picture frames. The frame collection comprises an estimated 30,000 to 35,000 frames, with 5,700 inventoried so far, including photographs and historical data. Many paintings have had multiple frames over time due to changes in ownership, presentation, or fashion, with some works associated with up to five different frames. The collection also includes a small but valuable set of early Italian Baroque frames acquired as independent art objects. Frames are now viewable via a button on each artwork's online page. The project is ongoing, led by conservator Angela Meincke, who has been at the Doerner Institut since 2024.
