Astoria Artshow Debuts in Vienna with 66 Galleries and a Guggenheim Joke

festival-fair · 2026-07-21

The Astoria Artshow, a newly launched art fair in Vienna, debuted with 66 galleries featuring 120 artists from around the globe and displaying 400 pieces of art across 500 square meters. This event was organized in just three months by 35 galleries under the Vienna Art United initiative and took place in a modernist parking garage built in 1935, reminiscent of the Guggenheim. Co-founder Markus Peichl mentioned that this partnership was partly inspired by the impending conclusion of the Viennacontemporary and Spark fairs in early 2026. Set to receive support from the City of Vienna next year, the fair seeks to merge exhibition and fair formats. A funding issue raised at the press conference sparked controversy, with the city confirming €16,000 amidst claims of €200,000. Notable artworks included pieces by Lawrence Weiner, Mark Dion, and others.
