Asia Pacific artists shine at Theater der Welt 2026 in Chemnitz

From June 18 to July 5, 2026, Chemnitz hosted the Theater der Welt festival, a triennial event in Germany showcasing over 30 performances from global companies. For the first time, the festival's programming was curated by nine international figures, including Simon Abrahams, CEO of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Approximately one-third of the featured works originated from the Asia Pacific region, with contributions from artists in Australia (Polyglot), China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan. Notable performances included Family Triangle by Taipei's Hung Chien-Han, Hung Wei-Yao, and Ray Tseng, which explores a lesbian couple's journey to parenthood amid Taiwanese IVF restrictions, and Ruwanthie de Chickera’s Dear Children, Sincerely… 7 Decades of Sri Lanka, reflecting on the nation’s history through elder interviews. Other highlights were Stream of Memory by Papermoon Puppet Theatre and various works from aRANYA THEATRE, Joyti Dogra, Yoko Ando, and Paper Tiger Theater Studio.
