Art Explora Festival Docks in Barcelona with Mediterranean-Focused Contemporary Art Program

festival-fair · 2026-03-29

The Art Explora Festival has arrived in Barcelona, transforming the Barcelona Dock near the World Trade Center into a contemporary art laboratory. From March 26 to April 6, 2026, the museum ship will remain at Port Vell for twelve days, offering accessible and free programming deeply connected to Mediterranean narratives. Curated by Rosa Lleó and Maguette Dieng, this edition emphasizes maritime mythologies, African diasporas, and collective memories that have shaped Barcelona as a meeting point. The festival challenges conventional art festival formats through its transdisciplinary approach, particularly exploring connections between sound and visual arts. Live programming includes fictional fish auctions referencing Mediterranean market exchanges, experimental performances, oral storytelling sessions, and concerts blending flamenco, electronic music, and traditional African sounds. Featured artists include Nkisi, Nadah El Shazly, and Dudù Kouate, all connected to Mediterranean diasporas. Three main exhibitions reflect the festival's philosophy: 'Present' (in collaboration with the Louvre) examines female figures from Mediterranean civilizations; 'Bajo el azur' brings together works by Joan Miró, Etel Adnan, Simone Fattal, and Anri Sala to investigate the Mediterranean as a space of myth and tension; and 'Contracorriente' addresses exile, migration, and hospitality through photography and moving images. The festival extends beyond the ship to Barcelona Nord Dock, hosting workshops, educational activities, and Ocean Weekend—a climate emergency-focused event where artists, researchers, and the public will address Mediterranean ecological challenges through artistic approaches. Rosa Lleó emphasizes the festival's focus on local creators with Mediterranean and African roots while maintaining dialogue with artists across the region. This edition represents an opportunity to redefine 21st-century art festivals as itinerant, inclusive, and responsive to contemporary urgencies.
