Art Basel's 'Basel Exclusive' keeps blue-chip works secret until VIP opening

Art Basel has launched 'Basel Exclusive', a voluntary initiative keeping select artworks secret until the VIP opening on Tuesday, June 16. The list, revealed by Artnet, includes blue-chip artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Bridget Riley, Lucio Fontana, and Joan Mitchell, alongside emerging talents Frieda Toranzo Jaeger and Maia Ruth Lee. Also featured are Ei Arakawa-Nash, Yto Barrada, Oriol Vilanova, Isabel Nolan (representing Japan, France, Spain, and Ireland at the Venice Biennale), as well as Zoe Leonard, Alvaro Barrington, and Dan Lie, who are also in the 'In Minor Keys' exhibition. Nearly 200 of the 232 exhibitors have opted to participate, though Art Basel has not disclosed which galleries represent each artist. Vincenzo De Bellis, global director of fairs, explained that the initiative has been in preparation for several years and serves as a counterbalance to the rise of digital transactions during the pandemic. He emphasized that 'Exclusive' highlights the fair's core appeal: offering works that require in-person viewing. The list is subject to change, but Art Basel positions this as a 'countertrend' to the hyper-digital art world.
