Art Basel Qatar Relocates to Herzog & de Meuron-Designed Island Venue by 2028

Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani confirmed that Art Basel Qatar will move to a purpose-built venue on Al Maha Island in Lusail, north of Doha, with groundbreaking targeted for 2028. The inaugural fair took place in February at M7 and the Doha Design District. The new venue is part of a mixed-use development housing exhibitions year-round, with over 150 homes, some by Herzog & de Meuron. The Lusail Museum, also by Herzog & de Meuron, will feature the world's largest collection of Orientalist art, including works by Titian, Delacroix, Gérôme, and Klee. Sheikha Al-Mayassa noted the project is a private-public partnership with an undisclosed lead investor and cost. She addressed regional tensions, stating the museum aligns with Qatar's foreign policy of bringing people together. Qatar Museums announced upcoming exhibitions: "Uzbekistan, Heritage in Motion" (3 Sep–28 Nov) at the Islamic Art Museum; Giuseppe Penone's "The Inner Flow of Life" (26 Oct–13 Feb 2027) at the National Museum of Qatar; and "Rubaiya Qatar" quadrennial (21 Nov–30 Apr 2027) at ALRIWAQ and the Museum of Islamic Art.
