Art Basel Paris Closes Two Days Early and Dismantles Public Sculptures Amid Protests

festival-fair · 2026-10-20

Starting the night of October 22, outdoor installations on Avenue Winston Churchill adjacent to the Grand Palais will be dismantled, coinciding with Art Basel Paris's decision to conclude the fair two days earlier due to anticipated "potential demonstrations." The main event will now wrap up on Friday at 7pm, following just one day open to the public. Originally planned from October 21 to 25, the public program showcased works by artists like Simone Fattal and Carmen Herrera. Alicja Kwade voiced her disappointment over the premature removal of her artwork, "L'Élévation des Mondes" (2026). Galleria Raffaella Cortese also confirmed that Maloberti's "CIEL" (2026) would be taken down. Protests are part of a broader national campaign concerning France's education system, prompting Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to announce heightened security measures.
