Art Basel Miami Beach Wins Rent Cut After Relocation Threat to Las Vegas

In a 6 to 1 decision, Miami Beach commissioners agreed to lower the rent for Art Basel Miami Beach’s convention center from around $1 million to $500,000, starting December 2026. Mayor Steven Meiner endorsed the agreement, which also provides $650,000 in annual savings for fire, police, and EMT services. Art Basel will benefit from a 30-day exclusivity period against competing art fairs and will have veto authority over events within a designated one-square-mile 'Art Basel zone.' This decision came after a New York Times article revealed executives' threats to relocate; CEO Noah Horowitz stated they might reconsider their presence in Miami Beach without this reduction. Collector Norman Braman criticized the rent increase and the relocation threats, while Horowitz mentioned a decline in exhibitors from 283 to 250. Established in 1970, Art Basel expanded to Miami Beach in 2002.
