Apple's upcoming smart glasses, currently code-named N50, are being developed with a distinctive camera system featuring vertically oriented oval lenses surrounded by lights, according to reliable insider Mark Gurman. This design, resembling a ring light, represents a departure from the circular lenses used in Meta's products and appears intended to make recording more noticeable, addressing widespread criticism of covert filming by smart glasses users. Unlike competitors who partner with eyewear specialists, Apple will design both hardware and software entirely in-house, leveraging its integrated approach that proved successful with the Apple Watch. The company aims to create a design instantly recognizable as Apple, similar to AirPods and the Apple Watch, and is exploring various colors and frames. Development on this concept reportedly began around 2022, with Apple now motivated by Meta's strong market performance. The product is expected to launch by the end of this year or possibly in 2027, though it will not include displays in the lenses like Meta's Ray-Ban Displays.
