Apple's iOS 27 Liquid Glass Slider Signals Design Retreat

During WWDC26, Apple revealed that iOS 27 will feature a slider enabling users to modify the transparency of Liquid Glass, the semi-transparent visual style introduced with iOS 26, ranging from completely clear to fully opaque. This is the first instance since the adoption of flat design in 2013 that Apple has allowed a fundamental design component to be optional. Hidden within the release notes, this slider effectively counters one of the company's most debated design choices. This change reflects a newfound flexibility in Apple's design approach, as they adapt to user preferences regarding interface transparency. Additionally, the Mac Messages sidebar has reverted to its vibrant design, and the toolbar has been reinstated following user feedback. Meanwhile, Siri AI enhances conversations without altering the interface, while the Image Playground's dark minimal sidebar remains unaffected.
