Anthropic, a U.S.-based artificial intelligence startup, experienced a significant security breach when an employee accidentally included modified source code for Claude Code, the company's AI-powered coding assistant, in a publicly accessible software package. The leak, containing over 512,000 lines of code, was discovered and decrypted by software engineer and cybersecurity researcher Shou Chaofan on Tuesday. He subsequently shared the findings on X.com, where the post garnered more than 33 million views by Thursday, attracting global attention. This incident has generated considerable excitement within China's developer community, where individuals have been actively downloading and analyzing the leaked materials. Anthropic, along with other major AI firms like OpenAI and Google, does not offer its services in mainland China, citing national security concerns. The company had previously identified China as an adversarial nation and implemented access restrictions. Despite these barriers, Chinese developers have shown strong interest in Anthropic's AI models due to their advanced capabilities in automating programming tasks such as code writing and debugging, which enhance development efficiency.
