AI Smart Glasses Used for Academic Dishonesty in China, Prompting Global Security Measures

In China, students have been reported to rent AI-enabled smart glasses to cheat on examinations. These devices, which can provide answers to questions, are available from companies including Meta and Rokid. A rental market has emerged, with prices ranging from $6 to $12 daily, as advertised on Chinese social media platforms. One student admitted to using the glasses for cheating and renting them to peers, while a businessman confirmed renting Rokid and Alibaba models primarily to students for exam purposes. Despite bans on such devices during college entrance and civil service exams in China, enforcement is difficult due to their discreet design. Similar concerns have arisen internationally: the College Board prohibits smart glasses during SAT tests, the U.S. Air Force has banned them for personnel in uniform, and Royal Caribbean restricts them on certain ship areas. An app called Nearby Glasses, which detects devices like Meta Ray-Bans via Bluetooth signals, has been developed to address surveillance issues. The expansion of China's AI glasses market is supported by government subsidies and tech firms such as Xiaomi and Alibaba, which integrate large language models into wearables.
