African Film Fest Australia has expanded its programming to Melbourne for 2026, running from March 27 to 29 at Cinema Nova. The festival serves as a national platform for African cinema, emphasizing cultural exchange and diverse narratives. It aims to challenge perceptions of African filmmaking as monolithic or marginal, instead presenting it as formally innovative and globally relevant. Three notable films in the lineup include 'The Fisherman,' a magic realist comedy by director Zoey Martinson that follows a retired Ghanaian fisherman who befriends a talking fish, exploring themes of modernity and displacement. 'Nawi' is a Kenyan coming-of-age drama directed by a collaborative team including Vallentine Chelluget, Kevin Schmutzler, Apuu Mourine, and Tobias Schmutzler, focusing on a girl's resistance to child marriage through social realism. 'Fanon,' directed by Jean-Claude Flamand-Barny, is a biographical drama about psychiatrist and anti-colonial theorist Frantz Fanon during his time in Algeria, examining the psychological impacts of colonialism. The festival's programming intentionally frames African cinema as a site for ethical engagement, inviting audiences to reflect on global inequities and colonial legacies, particularly in settler-colonial contexts like Australia.
