16th Curitiba Biennial 'Limiares' Transforms Borders into Meeting Points

The 16th Curitiba Biennial, titled 'Limiares' (Thresholds), opened at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (MON) and other venues in Curitiba, Brazil. Curated by Adriana Almada and Tereza de Arruda, the exhibition abandons linear narratives, bringing together artists of different generations, geographies, and cultures around themes of artificial intelligence, climate crisis, displacement, and non-Western cosmologies. A central installation by Chiharu Shiota features a dense web of red threads, symbolizing passage and transformation. The biennial includes a China Pavilion curated by Lyu Hongrong (Windy Lyu) and Xiao Ge with twenty artists, and a Macau section curated by Margarida Saraiva exploring technology's impact on language and identity. Other curators include Ferran Barenblit, Royce W. Smith, Massimo Scaringella, and Chiara Franceschini. Featured artists include Alessandra Bergero, Panmela Castro, Mayara Ferrão, Jaqueline Duhr, Tom Lisboa, Fernando Aidar, Giselle Beiguelman, Armarinhos Teixeira, Sunjeong Hwang, Barbara Steppe, Li Qin, Froiid, Fabiana Gabas Kallás, Max de Esteban, Matilde Marín, Jessie Kleemann, Thiago Martins de Melo, Javier Calvo Sandí, Paulo Nazareth, Mabilón Jiménez Quispe, Regina José Galindo, Davide Boriani, Júlia Salvetti, Matteo Mezzadri, and Alberto Salvetti. The MuMA venue hosts 'Pó (Polvere)' curated by Scaringella and Franceschini. The biennial marks three decades of the Curitiba Biennial's international trajectory while engaging local issues.
