Stüssy Logo History: From Surfboard Scribble to Streetwear Icon

other · 2026-10-01

In the early 1980s, Shawn Stüssy, the brand's founder, created the Stüssy logo as a hand-drawn doodle on a surfboard, drawing inspiration from his uncle Jan Stüssy's signature. With a nod to 1970s punk culture, Shawn began crafting surfboards that prominently displayed the Stüssy name, which quickly gained popularity. The logo later appeared on Hanes T-shirts that were offered with surfboard purchases. In 1984, Shawn partnered with Frank Sinatra Jr. to introduce a clothing line that blended beachwear and streetwear. The brand made its European debut in 1988 and opened a store in SoHo, generating $17 million in revenue by 1991. Shawn departed from the brand in 1996, selling his shares and forfeiting the right to his surname.
