Sin dalla sua fondazione a Monterey nel 2014, il gruppo ha esplorato temi come la liminalità oceanica e le connessioni familiari, impiegando tecniche come il cliché verre e il compositing digitale. Fondato nel 1965, il NUMU enfatizza l'arte e la storia locale, continuando la sua tradizione di ospitare mostre dopo precedenti esposizioni. Il collettivo ha inoltre istituito il premio annuale Salon Jane Award for a Woman Photographer.
