Lee Miller: Da Modella di Vogue a Fotografa di Guerra

Il Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra ha organizzato una retrospettiva sulla fotografia di Lee Miller presso la Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume a Parigi, dal 21 ottobre 2008 al 4 gennaio 2009. Nata nel 1907 a Poughkeepsie, New York, Miller iniziò come modella per Vogue dopo aver incontrato Condé Nast nel 1927, posando per Edward Steichen. Nel 1929 raggiunse Man Ray a Parigi, diventando sua allieva, collaboratrice e amante; insieme scoprirono la solarizzazione. Miller aprì il suo studio, scattando fotografie di moda per Vogue e opere surrealiste come Exploding Hand. Dopo una mostra personale alla Julien Levy Gallery di New York, si sposò e si trasferì al Cairo, producendo immagini come Portrait of Space. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, documentò il Blitz a Londra, poi divenne corrispondente di guerra per Vogue, coprendo il fronte a Saint-Malo, Parigi, Alsazia e Germania. Fotografò la liberazione di Buchenwald e Dachau, catturando immagini come Murdered Prison Guard. Nel dopoguerra, lottò contro il disturbo da stress post-traumatico e smise in gran parte di fotografare, sebbene realizzò ritratti di amici come Picasso e Saul Steinberg.
