Italian Climate Movements Lose Visibility as Fridays for Future Protests Draw Thin Crowds

On Friday, 16 October, approximately twenty cities across Italy witnessed protests organized by Fridays for Future Italia alongside various environmental organizations. They called for government intervention on climate issues, increased green areas, and strategies to combat urban heat. Participation was limited, partly due to concurrent student demonstrations against educational reforms. Since 2019, climate activism has diminished, with large gatherings disrupted by lockdowns in 2020. Greta Thunberg initiated her strikes in late summer 2018, inspiring millions to join in 2019. However, subsequent actions saw a decline in turnout, while groups like Extinction Rebellion and Ultima Generazione gained traction. In 2023, the Meloni administration implemented strict measures against protests, causing environmental movements to pivot towards social justice, albeit with limited visibility. The national strike aimed to tackle local concerns following an exceptionally hot summer but was largely overlooked.
