Hollywood Turns to Internet-Born Stories as Studios Seek Built-In Audiences
Following the triumph of Backrooms, a horror film released in 2025 and created by 21-year-old Kane Parsons, Warner Bros. executives Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca have suggested a partnership with him. Backrooms achieved a remarkable $400 million at the box office, while 26-year-old Curry Barker's Obsession brought in $500 million from a mere $1 million budget. Markiplier's Iron Lung also performed well, generating $50 million on a $4 million budget. Meanwhile, Lionsgate has enlisted 25-year-old Dylan Clark for a reboot of the Blair Witch Project. Warner Bros. is working on an adaptation of Siren Head, a creature conceived by Trevor Henderson. Additionally, studios are now exploring online narratives, with Scott Glasgold's 1201 Films securing My Wife and I Bought a Ranch, which was sold to Amazon/MGM for $1 million. Markus Kliewer's The Caretaker is set to be developed into a Universal film, potentially featuring Sydney Sweeney.
