Zurbarán Restored: Louvre Exhibition Reveals Lost Colors of Bonaventure Cycle

exhibition · 2026-10-21

Two paintings by Francisco de Zurbarán from the Bonaventure cycle at the Louvre, titled Saint Bonaventure au concile de Lyon and L'Exposition du corps de saint Bonaventure, have returned from restoration with a transformed color palette. Chief curator Charlotte Chastel-Rousseau initiated the restoration process in 2020, which has led to a retrospective. Both oil on linen damask pieces, created around 1629, were originally commissioned in 1627 for the San Buenaventura college in Seville. The restoration unveiled significant alterations and the original hues. The exhibition, in collaboration with the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of London, showcases 65 works, including 50 by Zurbarán, at the Musée du Louvre until 25 January 2027.
