Zorka Furniture's STRATUM: 600 CNC-Cut Plywood Layers Form 29-Foot Bench at Haywood Mall
In Greenville, South Carolina, Zorka Furniture has crafted STRATUM, a parametric bench made of plywood, now located in the central concourse of Haywood Mall. This impressive structure spans approximately 345 inches (8.76 meters) — almost 29 feet — and weighs over 5,500 pounds (2,500 kilograms). Composed of more than 600 CNC-cut wooden pieces sourced from around 100 plywood sheets, its unique geometry was designed using digital software. The bench's layered design features curves, seating areas, and arched openings, inviting visitors to sit, explore, and take photos. To accommodate ongoing mall operations, it was constructed in modular sections, shipped on five pallets, and assembled overnight. Inspired by Utah's natural arches and landscapes, Zorka Furniture presents this work as a sculptural installation that enhances public spaces. The project was featured on designboom through its DIY submissions and edited by Christina Vergopoulou, credited as Bench Stratum, made from CNC-cut plywood at Haywood Mall.
