Zohra Opoku's First Museum Survey Opens at Zeitz MOCAA

The inaugural museum survey of Ghanaian-German artist Zohra Opoku, titled 'We Proceed in the Footsteps of the Sunlight', will be held at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town from 11 September to 4 October 2026. Curated by Beata America and Dr. Phokeng Setai, this exhibition showcases a decade of Opoku’s artistic endeavors, which include photography, textiles, printmaking, sculpture, and installation. Opoku, who was born in East Germany and later moved to Accra to reconnect with her heritage, delves into themes of identity, belonging, ancestry, and memory. The exhibition features key works like 'Queen Mothers', 'Unravelled Threads', 'The Myths of Eternal Life', and 'Give Me Back My Black Dolls', with its title inspired by the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, emphasizing transformation and passage. Fabric serves as both a medium and a repository, addressing cultural inheritance, family, and displacement across time and space, ultimately fostering dialogue on diasporic identity and memory.
