ZHA unveils forested masterplan for Baku Expo City with wind-resistant homes

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has unveiled its masterplan for Baku Expo City, a sprawling 198-hectare development in Azerbaijan. This project will include a network of residential areas, civic buildings, cultural spaces, parks, medical facilities, and sports clubs. Central to the design is an expansion of the Baku Expo Center, featuring a Congress Hall, hotel, and a public square with leisure and hospitality options. The housing options, from one-bedroom apartments to larger family homes, are envisioned as stacked white structures with green roofs to mitigate harsh winds. ZHA conducted a pedestrian wind-comfort analysis to enhance public space sheltering, addressing Baku's 'City of Winds' moniker. The plan preserves 80 percent of the 18,000 existing pine trees, with a focus on forestry management and replanting. Green roofs will aid in reducing cooling energy needs and improving thermal insulation while integrating a rainwater collection system. Sustainability is prioritized through renewable energy sources, passive design strategies, water management, and low-carbon materials. Public transport will be enhanced by the upgraded Bakikhanov-Bina-Gala rail line, connecting the area to Baku city center and the airport. ZHA is also known for the Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku, while the international airport was designed by Turkish firm Autoban.
