Zeitz MOCAA Presents 'Turning Towards the Sun' with Julie Mehretu's 20th BMW Art Car

A new exhibition called 'Turning Towards the Sun' is set to launch at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, in collaboration with the African Film and Media Arts Collective and BMW. Running from December 11, 2026, to August 15, 2027, on Level 4 of the Cape Town museum, it showcases the works of six talented artists and filmmakers: Zeresenay Berhane Mehari, Mati Diop, Jim Chuchu, Wanuri Kahiu, Robin Coste Lewis, and The Otolith Group. Curated by Khanyi Mawhayi, the exhibit explores themes of Pan-African unity and post-liberation issues, including women’s anger and Black queer identities. The title references Ousmane Sembène's 1983 documentary 'Twenty Years of African Cinema.' Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW South Africa, noted the project's evolution as a platform for artistic conversation, supported by the Mellon Foundation and BMW South Africa.
