YSG revamps Sydney art deco apartment with chamfered surfaces and warm hues
YSG has completed a full renovation of a 95-square-meter apartment in a 1929 art deco building in Redfern, Sydney, Australia. The project, named The Gentleman, reflects the personalities of the two male clients. Director Yasmine Ghoniem said the home personifies their combined attributes, becoming a third 'gentleman.' The design reinstates original art deco features like chamfered surfaces, stepped cornices, and skirtings, while removing later interventions. The apartment has views of the Sydney Opera House. Rooms are arranged linearly with the entrance and dining at center, flanked by two bedrooms on one side and bathroom, kitchen, and living room on the other. Door heights were raised to accommodate the tall clients, with original architraves preserved and extended using Australian Red Cedar. The color palette includes lead white, ochre yellow, chocolate brown, and toffee. The kitchen features stainless steel and Lauriana quartzite. The bathroom has a monolithic vanity and amber glass windows. Geometric motifs reference Balkan cilim textiles, honoring one client's Bosnian/Croatian heritage. Amber sconces echo the original front door. Photography is by Anson Smart.
