Young Projects' Cut Out House embraces Canadian Rockies landscape

In the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the Cut Out House by New York-based Young Projects, led by architect Bryan Young, serves as a family holiday retreat. The 3,320 sq ft residence features a curved 'cut out' opening that embraces a retained boulder, creating an inviting entrance and shelter from winds. A butterfly roof defines the volume, visible across a nearby body of water. Inside, a piano nobile houses open-plan living, kitchen, dining, and study areas, with a primary suite and three guest bedrooms tucked into the slope. Materials include textured concrete, light wood, and warm stone, with furnishings from B&B Italia, Bocci, and Bloc Studios. The studio, known for material exploration and form-driven design, also completed Six Square House in Long Island and has ongoing residential, retail, and hospitality projects.
