YN Studio wraps London extension in recycled plastic tiles mimicking slate
YN Studio has finalized the Tile House project, a rooftop addition situated in Hackney, London, featuring recycled plastic tiles designed to resemble natural slate. The renovation of the Victorian terrace incorporates a modern mix of natural and repurposed materials, highlighted by interiors of Douglas fir. Central to the design is a skylit double-height stair lobby, which director Alex Smith identifies as the studio's standout achievement. The main bedroom has been moved to the new dormer area beneath a Douglas fir ceiling with a deep skylight. A study, positioned under the existing roof slope, includes a mobile plywood desk, while the skylit bathroom showcases white tiles and terrazzo flooring. The ground floor remains mostly intact, with plans for an additional quarry-tile-clad extension set to commence later this year. Established in 2017, YN Studio also created Bradbury Works in Dalston.
